Skiing/Snowboarding and Winter Recreation
In just a little over and hour's drive, you could be mining black diamonds at one of Lake Tahoe's seven world-class ski resorts, touring the Tahoe backcountry on cross-country skis or revvin' it up on a snowmobile as you feed your need for excitement and encounter breathtaking views of the Sierras.
And if, like most students, you're short on time and cash, within 45 minutes and for just $21, you can be strapped into your boots and bindings, barreling down the chutes of Mt. Rose during "Student Wednesdays."
Kayaking
Kayaking enthusiasts, look no further. Just minutes from the University and in the heart of downtown Reno, you can sharpen your playboating skills at the Truckee River Whitewater Park. The Whitewater Park is open year-round and is, truly, one-of-a-kind. And, you can always kayak Lake Tahoe.
Mountain Biking
The Reno and Tahoe area boasts miles and miles of mountain bike trails for every level. A few trails worth mentioning are the Peavine Trail, Flume Trail and Tahoe Rim Trail.
Hiking
If you enjoy hiking, you simply couldn't ask for a better area than Reno, Tahoe. Covering 165 miles of some of the most stunning Lake Tahoe terrain, the Tahoe Rim Trail is sure to please any hiker. Additionally, there are a plethora of other Tahoe trails that offer breath-taking views of the Sierras.
Fishing With a variety of rivers, urban ponds, lakes and reservoirs, Northern Nevada has some outstanding fishing holes where you can hook trout, salmon, mountain whitefish and even small mouth bass.
Golf
With six public golf courses, Reno has plenty of green. Tahoe offers some outstanding courses, as well. A Reno favorite is the highly-regarded LakeRidge Golf Course. If you head a few minutes east of Reno to the City of Sparks, you can experience the Resort at Red Hawk.
Arts and Culture
It is said that Reno is Artown. Why not spend a Saturday afternoon at the Nevada Museum of Art, and then head over to Java Jungle, a favorite local hangout, for a shot of espresso? Or, maybe you'd like to wander the River Walk and peruse the local galleries of the Truckee River Arts District?
If it's the stage that interests you, Reno is home to the Br%uFFFDka Theater, and that famous bard, Shakespeare, can be found at the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. You'll find more at Nevada's Theater Coalition and Sierra Arts.
And if you're still craving arts and culture, spend a week out on the Black Rock Desert playa at the annual Burning Man Festival, located 120 miles from Reno.
Other interesting Reno venues include the National Automobile Museum, the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, the Nevada Opera and the Reno Philharmonic.
Community Events
Reno is also home to some infamous community events. If you like tasty bites, you'll love the Rib Cook-Off, but BYOB (bring your own bib)! Other events include Eldorado's Great Italian Festival and the west's biggest Cinco de Mayo Celebration.
Sure to get classic car enthusiasts cruisin' is Hot August Nights. If two wheels are more your style, then the Street Vibrations motorcycle festival will send you straight to hog heaven! And, if you'd rather leave the streets and take to the air, the Air Races or the Reno Balloon Races might be just the thing.
