Geology Field Camp Information:

Most of the first two weeks of the geology field camp will be run out of our field station in Ruth, about 10 miles west of Ely, Nevada. There, accommodations are rustic dorm-style, with a lounge, lecture room, kitchen, and showers. Laundromat facilities and a post office are nearby. During the remaining four weeks of the geology field camp, we will set up a mobile camp in various picturesque locations in western Nevada and northern California, including state and national parks, near our study areas.  Our campsites are close to colorful small towns and villages. Most field camp meals will be planned and prepared by a field camp manager, and students will help with cooking and cleanup.

All food and camping expenses are covered in the course fees.

Weather:

In mountainous areas of Nevada and eastern California, you can count on cool evenings and warm to hot days in June. In July, temperatures are generally warmer. We will be working mainly at elevations between 5,000 and 11,000 feet (with one week at sea level), so sunscreen and a hat are essential. Most days are clear, but we have had light snows in June. Spring rains, including afternoon thunderstorms, are possible too, so raingear is essential.

Logistics:

The Geology Field Camp will begin at noon on May 28, 2008, on the UNR campus.

Plan to arrive in Reno on May 27, so as to avoid any problems caused by flight delays. After an initial orientation session, we will drive to Ruth, Nevada. Our first night (May 28) will be at the field station. Field work will commence on May 29 and will continue through July 9. The group will return to Reno by early evening on July 9. Airline departures from Reno should be scheduled for July 10 in case of delays in returning from northern California.
