What you need to bring:
Camping gear
- Warm sleeping bag and thermarest pad or inflatable mattress
- Tent with rainfly and ground cloth
- Personal mess kit (utensils, plate, cup, etc.)
Field gear
- Day pack large for lunch, water, field supplies, extra clothing, rock samples, etc.
- Water bottles or hydration cell (at least 3 liters recommended)
- Vest, hammer, safety glasses
- Hand lens, acid bottle, magnet, Brunton compass if you have one
- Durable field notebook (e.g. Rite-in-the Rain - a steno or spiral-bound notebook will not work), pencils/erasers & sharpener, Map board or clipboard
- Personal first aid kit
- Cell phone and charger (for safety purposes)
- Inexpensive digital camera
- Copy of Geology in the Field by R.R. Compton, published by Wiley (required)
Drafting equipment
- compass
- scales (we suggest C-thru brand, usually available at campus bookstores; get a 10/50 and 20/40)
- multiple (at least 10) colored pencils (especially red and blue); several felt-tip markers for marking samples (eg Sharpie brand) for labelling samples
- pocket calculator (optional, but useful)
Personal Items
- A range of clothing (weather description); HATS ARE ESSENTIAL
- Good field boots (please break them in before coming to camp) and plenty of heavy-duty socks
- Personal toiletries and medications (including SUNSCREEN and lip balm)
- Wristwatch or other timepiece (required for meeting rendezvous times)

What you MAY want to bring:
If you own some of the items below, you may wish to bring them. We have never had a problem with theft, but remember that we will be in a field situation where it may be difficult to lock up expensive gear. UNR cannot accept responsibility for personal items.
- GPS receiver
- Laptop computer- very useful
- Binoculars
- Pocket knife
- Flashlight
What NOT to bring:
- Pets of any sort (except pet rocks....)
- Significant others, friends, etc.
- Firearms or large knives (may be grounds for immediate dismissal)
- Mountain bikes
