Education:
Middlebury College , B.S. in Geology; University of Southern California , Ph.D.
My research applies structural techniques to solving tectonic problems, and currently focuses on two areas:
1. Evolution of the Sierra Nevada - Basin and Range transition zone: Jim Trexler and I have had several NSF grants to study the record in Neogene basin deposits. We have constrained the ages of basin initiation and exhumation, and documented syn- and post-depositional faulting in several basins; the results indicate more recent formation of the Sierran frontal fault system than has been recognized previously. One of my MS students and one of my PhD students are working on parts of this project. I am a co-P.I. on Jim Faulds ’s NSF grant for a related project; it is supporting additional graduate students.
2. Late Paleozoic deformation in north-central Nevada: My NSF grant (with Trexler, Snyder (BSU ) and Davydov (BSU)) funded this work. We have documented several significant, previously unrecognized, late Paleozoic orogenic events whose effects were formerly attributed to either the Antler orogeny or Mesozoic tectonism. We published a research paper on these results in 2003, two other papers are in press, and we will lead a field trip at the GSA Cordilleran – Rocky Mountain section meeting in 2004. One MS student and one PhD student from UNR are working on parts of this project. Trexler and I submitted a grant proposal to NSF in 2003 to continue this work; colleagues Davydov (BSU) and Taylor (UNLV) submitted collaborative proposals.
2003 Sponsored Research:
National Science Foundation grant EAR 9903418: “Extent, style and tectonic significance of Pennsylvanian deformation in the Great Basin : a test of late Paleozoic tectonic models for the western U.S. ”: $140,134 for two years (UNR portion), co-PIs are Jim Trexler (UNR), Walt Snyder ( Boise State University ) and Vladimir Davydov (BSU). Ended 6/30/03 .
National Science Foundation grant EAR 0124869 “ Neogene development of the northern Walker Lane ; an evolving transform plate boundary”; $272,576 for three years; P.I. is Jim Faulds (NBMG)
