Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Oppliger completed his Ph.D. in Engineering Geoscience from U. C. Berkeley, 1982, where he specialized in electromagnetic exploration methods including aspects of field instrumentation, signal processing and electrical modeling. Dr. Oppliger’s professional experience includes 18 years as a research and exploration geophysicist for major mining exploration companies. There his work involved the development of industry leading mineral exploration technologies, including image processing methodologies and potential field acquisition systems and the geologic analysis of geophysical information – much of it applied to the Great Basin of the Western U.S.A.
In 1999, Dr. Gary Oppliger joined the Arthur Brant Laboratory for Exploration Geophysics in the Department Geological Sciences as a Research Associate Professor, where he teaches courses in satellite radar interferometer applications and electromagnetic and potential field exploration methods. His recent research includes interferometric radar (InSAR), GPS and gravity investigations of basins in northwestern Nevada for geologic structure, groundwater, and geothermal resources.
Current Research Projects:
- InSAR Reservoir Monitoring for Geothermal Production Enhancement
- InSAR-GPS Investigation of Seasonal Groundwater Response in Reno
- Gravity Analysis of Basement Structure, Geothermal Exploration, Desert Peak, Nevada
- Ultra High Resolution Local Gravimetric Geoid Computation
