Research Interests:
My research concentrates on basin analysis, with a focus on tectonic history as recorded by basin stratigraphy. Currently, I am working in two areas:

Late Paleozoic tectonic history of the Great Basin . I am working in strata of the upper Paleozoic, elucidating the complex tectonic history of the margin of North America after the Antler orogeny but before the Sonoma orogeny. We have defined a new thrust belt superimposed on Antler foreland basin strata, and worked out a new, unconformity-based organization scheme for Mississippian, Pennsylvanian, and Permian rocks. This work has been funded by NSF, through grants awarded to me and my colleagues. Collaboration with a strong research group at Boise State University and the USGS has enabled me to broaden and generalize my investigations. Principle collaborators include Pat Cashman (UNR), Walt Snyder and Vladimir Davydov ( Boise State University), and Bruce Wardlaw (USGS).

Tertiary basins in the northern Walker Lane, Western Great Basin . The Sierra Nevada - Basin and Range boundary is a zone of Neogene, distributed strike-slip deformation where large (mountain range scale) blocks have not only slipped past each other along major faults, but also have pushed up to form ranges and down to form basins. Stratigraphy of these basins records this tectonic activity. By combining detailed stratigraphy and sedimentology, structural studies, high-resolution isotopic dating, vertebrate biostratigraphy, tephrochronology, and gravity modeling, my colleagues and I are integrating the record in these poorly understood basins into a coherent Neogene tectonic history. In particular, Pat Cashman , Gary Oppliger, and John Louie (UNR); Jim Faulds , Chris Henry and Larry Garside (NBMG); Mike Perkins ( Univ. of Utah ), and Tom Kelly ( Los Angeles County Museum ) have been instrumental in this work.
