Mission


There is a long history of teaching and research in the Geosciences at the University of Nevada, Reno, with the first Professor of Geology and Minerology appointed in 1900. A consequence of a century plus of teaching and research has resulted in the department having a unique perspective in its research and specialized laboratories.

Building on this history, the mission of the Department of Geological Sciences and Engineering continues to be to serve the people of Nevada through applying knowledge and professional values in the Earth Sciences and Engineering. The Department develops professionals and educated citizens capable of meeting society’s needs with regard to the earth, including scientific studies, education, environmentally sustainable resource discovery and development, natural hazards assessment and mitigation.
