Delphi Round 2 - Future Needs

We need to:

  • develop a long term "Vision" of a desirable future and within that context a vision of Sustainability for Mineral Resources;
  • focus on a definition of sustainability that includes mineral reosurces and shift prescriptions for management to an appendix;
  • state our vision in positive as opposed to negative terms;
  • include the short term (current generation) aspects of SD as well as the long term (future generation) aspects;
  • incorporate the concept of multiple use and acknowledge the need to balance among competing interests of economic growth, environmental protection, and societal needs;
  • put less emphasis on exhaustability and nonrenewability and more emphasis on mineral sustainability, i.e., recycling, substitution, regeneration, contributions to endowments or capital;
  • consider both sources and sinks;
  • address issues of scale - global, national, regional - and also of local versus global optima.
